The what's yo flava post in intranationalities somehow led to me looking up cuisine of Karnataka on Wikipedia. It's kind of hilarious how much fun I'm having. Akki roti! Bisi bele bath! Bonda! Neer dosai! Kosambari! Chakli! Ragi mudde! Puliyogare and pongal! OH MY GOD I HAVE TO GO GROCERY SHOPPING AND I'M HUNGRY NOW. Well, maybe it's for the best. ;)

Are you a good girl? You know what we mean: you listen to your parents, there’s no gossip about you in the “community.” Or are you a bad girl? Were you caught smoking in high school? Did you marry that white boy against your parents’ wishes?

We ask you to contribute your story to a forthcoming volume: “Mama Says Good Girls Marry Doctors.” This book focuses on the pressures on South and East Asian women who have grown up in North America to be “good girls.” It seeks to collect the stories of such women, and their traumas, victories, and defeats as they face the control that their immigrant parents try to exercise over them in relation to the choice of a partner, or a career, or their freedom. We want to know how negotiating these pressures affects young Asian diasporic women, their relationship to feminism, to their parents and to their partners or siblings.

Chromatic memery!

There's this meme going around where you replace white actors with actors of colour in various fandoms that don't have much diversity. I hadn't been familiar with any of the fandoms until I came across entwashian's recasting of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. Loved it! Wanted to do one myself! But... I couldn't think of a fandom. Then dhobikikutti mentioned recasting the Star Wars universe in Bollywood style and I simply COULD NOT RESIST! :DDDD

So here it is, Star Wars Bollywood-ishstyle! Let's divide this shit up.

(Originally, I had cast Asian characters to replace the original characters of colour too. But then I figured that since chromatic characters are under-represented anyway, erasure of existing characters isn't all that great. Fun fact: up until a few months ago, I didn't realize that paisley print was the same thing as mango print. I've always called the pattern "mango print" because that's what we call it at home. That's what my mom and my aunts all call it. Come to think of it, I wasn't really ever sure what paisley print referred to. I thought it was some kind of flowery polka-dotted pattern, for some reason. Then one day I was online looking for tiling Twitter backgrounds, came across a pattern labeled as paisley, and became very confused. "Wait, that's a mango print! It's called paisley too? But... why?" Wiki came to the rescue of course. Basically, the East India Company couldn't import as many paisley shawls as they wanted to from India, so they started making them in a Scottish town called Paisley.

I dunno about anyone else, but I think "paisley" is a really odd name for the pattern when you consider its linguistic roots. Like I said, I think of paisley and I envision flowers and polka-dots. This? Is none of that. I'm calling it mango print til the end of time and I don't care if people don't know what I'm talking about. :P

So last night I suddenly got the BSOD on my laptop for no apparent reason. Fucking BSOD. Anyway, I glibly thought that perhaps there was a god I needed to appease in order to get my technology to work. But then the question remains: who would the Hindu god of technology be? As I fell asleep I decided it was Saraswati but then my mind made a leap to the question "if the Hindu gods were high school students at some posh boarding school in the Himalayan foothills, what would they be like?"

This is what I came up with. (I'm too fannish for my own good.)

Yuletide reveal has occurred! :D Can I just say how much fun I'm having seeing who wrote what? So exciting! dhobikikutti wrote the Dhoom 2 fic! toft wrote the KHNH OT3! fivil wrote for dharmavati! YAYNESS.

First off, I want to thank ambientlight for my luscious Haibane Renmei fic and taurenova for the cutest Darths & Droids treat that I could have asked for. Your stories for me made me squee like a crazy squeeing thing. :)

My gift was the Spirited Away fic While We Wait For This Rebirth for temaris. I struggled for ideas in the beginning but once I re-watched the movie, ideas and inspiration flowed like crazy. I was done halfway through December and used the rest of the time to beta and go over it with a fine toothed comb. To be honest, I think it's one of the best things I've written. :)

I also wrote a treat, The Metaphor Principle for caramarie, fic for the song 'The Predatory Wasp of The Palisades is Out To Get Us' by Sufjan Stevens. To be quite honest, that song has always been so very House/Wilson AU to me, so I just embraced that idea, twisted it a little, and went on my merry way. Tiny canons are the way to go!

(Am I the only one getting weirded out by seeing the number 2010 as the year date at the top of everyone's entries? It's like... zomg I'm in the future hahahaha.)

Hello all! Figured it might be a good idea to post something here. I'm still using my LJ as my main journal, but I was kind of getting sick of the OpenID business. Hence, new journal. :)
