I didn't know I was that vocal about it.. I just remember loving a FFVIII fic that was high school AU (though you could argue all of FFVIII is in a way a high school AU in itself!) and even if it wasn't all that well-written, enjoyed it. The problem with hs AU's is that they usually suck from the story/writing perspective. :/
