plazmah: Abstract circle and square with "plazmah" underneath (Bones Quote)

Here are my [profile] prompt_a_day  inspired ficlets. Both are mindless Brennan/Booth fun. Enjoy.

Mutually Exclusive

"You're being illogical. If you keep up this manner of thinking, I may have to draw a Venn Diagram."

"A whatagram?"

Her sigh is long-suffering and a part of him dances with glee every time he frustrates her. There's a mutinous fire in her eyes when she's glaring at him. And it thrills him to know that he can get under her skin so easily. Life is messy and rarely follows logic. He wants to teach her that.

However, Temperance Brennan is an unwilling pupil.

Her patience is wearing thin. "There is no way that the killer could have hidden the weapon in the apartment and carried the body to the garbage chute. It doesn't fit the timeline. The two events are mutually exclusive."

She must have noticed that he wasn't paying attention to her explanation, because the next moment she's brandishing a marker in his face.

"Booth, are you listening? That's it, I'm drawing the Venn Diagram." She sketches on the paper next to her, with circles and times and events, and a light goes off in his head as he watches her.

"Hey, I remember these. The overlapping circle thingies from math class. Why do they have to give it such a fancy name anyway?"

She frowns. "It's named after John Venn, the British mathematician who-"

He holds up his hand to cut her off and that annoyance flashes across her face again. This time he feels guilty. He's being an ass and he knows it.

"Sorry. But I get it, thanks to your picture. This means that either he didn't do it or-"

"-He had an accomplice." She looks pleased with herself for figuring it out, for finishing his thought, and in all honestly he's pleased with her too. She's come a long way from the stoic, difficult scientist he first started working with. And part of him knows that she's not the only one that's changed from their partnership.

He doesn't mind change. Not in this case.

Jailbait

The phrase is on the tip of her tongue, hiding somewhere in the dark recesses of her mind, but she can't quite grasp what she is trying to find.

"Prison fodder." She blurts out.

Booth turns to her with that expressive 'Are you crazy' look that she's sure he reserves for moments such as this. "What?"

"That girl at the hospital. She was prison fodder." She reiterates, wondering why he doesn't understand. It makes sense to her. "Keep your eyes on the road." She adds warningly. Booth is still looking at her and the vehicle is starting to drift to the right.

He straightens out the steering wheel with a jerk. "Bones, what the heck are you talking about?"

"Despite being only sixteen years old, she carried herself with a sexual maturity one would observe in a woman of a significantly higher age. And she was flirting with you." Brennan replies as way of explanation, wishing for the millionth time (this was a use of hyperbole) that there wasn't such a gaping chasm of misunderstanding between them all the time. He doesn't see the world the way she sees it, and not only is it frustrating but it creates a marked factor of inefficiency in their partnership. If they spent less time arguing things would run much more smoothly.

But he's learning; both of them are. And a part of her has to admit that she enjoys arguing with him. She likes the way he doesn't back down. Most men are intimidated by an intelligent woman.

"Wait. You mean jailbait?" He says slowly, in that deadpan voice that usually indicates that her convoluted terminology astounds him.

"Yes, jailbait. But prison fodder is a pretty appropriate synonym, I think."

He doesn't say anything in response, and a comfortable silence settles between them for a minute. Then she slowly realizes that Booth is struggling to contain a fit of laughter.

"What? What's so funny?" She questions, feeling confused.

He glances over at her, his body shaking with amusement. "Bones... sometimes, you're just so... cute."

Brennan feels her face flush at the comment, although she isn't exactly sure why. Booth continues to laugh at her for a moment longer before finally calming down.

"Was she really flirting with me?" He asks with a grin.

"Yes, she was. I noticed."

His grin grows even wider. "Jealous?"

Her face is still warm as she turns away to face the window, rolling her eyes. "Hardly."

He doesn't press any further, just keeps driving with that self-satisfied grin on his face. She turns back to him finally, studying his face and wondering what he's thinking. When she finally catches his eye, his smile is warm and she feels that gaping chasm between them shrink ever so slightly.

OH AWESOME. Especially the latter story - something I could totally picture happening in current canon. You're getting better & better at B/B banter. Whooo.

How the hell did I not find this before?

The first one was awesome, a really good representation of their relationship, and a nice bit of Boot POV on it. The second one, though. THat's gold. It's cute, and funny, and makes my little shipper heart squishy precisely because it's not overly so. And that's totally something she'd say. *snicker*

(Also, that last line gave me shivers a little bit. Excellent closing.)
