Summary: It's Valentine's Day at the Jeffersonian and opinions are colliding.
Notes: This one totally came to me as I read this article in today's paper. As usual, I don't own Bones or any of the characters. Unbetaed, so forgive me my errors.

The Jeffersonian was in the midst of a quiet lull, given that no cases were pending for Brennan and her team. Cam had taken the day off, and as Brennan swiped into the platform and approached Zack and Hodgins, it looked as if their resident entomologist was eager to leave as well.
"I've got it all planned out." he said to Zack with casual bravado. "Nothing too fancy, of course. I'll cook her dinner, we'll watch a movie or two on the couch with a couple glasses of wine. It'll be nice; a perfect Valentine's Day."
Zack blinked at him. "And your reason for telling me all of this is to get some sort of ego-boosting comments on how impressed I am at your ability to woo a woman?"
Hodgins stared at him critically. "Please don't ever use the word 'woo' again. And this isn't any woman, it's Angela."
"Valentine's Day is an archaic tradition." Brennan interjected, arms crossed over her chest. "And in modern society it's nothing more than a commercialized ploy to stimulate the economy, not to mention a patriarchal tradition of placing emphasis on the burgeoning notion of couple-dom."
"Commercialized ploy, I can agree with." Hodgins replied as a grin crept over his face. "But there's nothing wrong with showing a little love, baby."
"Valentine's Day just reminds me that I'm single." Zack blurted out. "Or, if I'm not single, Valentine's Day presents a maze of social hurdles that usually ends up with me becoming single all over again."
Brennan's look was vaguely sympathetic, but Hodgins began to laugh loudly. "Man, you really do need some help in the love department."
"Is that an offer?"
"Not a chance in hell."
Angela's voice interrupted the conversation. "Hey guys, look what I just found." She climbed up the platform with a sheet of paper in her hand, handing it to Brennan. "I just printed this off an archeology website, check it it out."
Brennan frowned at the title. "'Italy's recently discovered prehistoric couple will continue their 5,000-year-old embrace undisturbed through Valentine's Day and beyond'?"
Angela nodded. "Keep reading."
Brennan shrugged and continued. "'"We will work to keep them together," said Elena Menotti, the archaeologist who led the dig. "Removing the turf in one piece will preserve the position and allow us to collect more data on the burial."'"
"Isn't that just so sweet?" Angela said brightly.
"Science and love? Definitely a perfect combination." Hodgins quipped, winking at Angela.
"Are you just agreeing with Angela so that she will view you as a sensitive individual?" Zack asked, earning a glare from Hodgins as Angela tried to hide her smile. Zack deflated, a defensive tone in his voice. "I'm only attempting to learn my way around women."
Brennan looked at the article thoughtfully. "It'll be a lot more work for them to transport the two separate skeletons and the surrounding surface, but the analysis will be a lot more complete and thorough this way. I just wish they hadn't mixed in all those Valentine's Day insinuations."
"Sweetie, that's the entire point." Angela countered. "Holiday spirit and all that jazz."
"Making it look as if some antiquated ritual had any bearing on how scientists are proceeding with an excavation is misleading and illogical." Brennan said, her voice slowly rising in volume. "They're keeping the skeletons together: great. But why bring Valentine's Day into the equation?"
There was the sound of footsteps and an electronic chime behind them as someone entered the platform. "Because, Bones, the whole reason this story has captured people's attention is because of the romance of it all." Booth had an amused look on his face. "You might be looking at this whole thing intellectually, but the rest of the world isn't thinking about archeology and cause of death. People look at those skeletons and think about a love that was so strong that it went beyond death or the test of time."
Angela turned back to Brennan, looking victorious. "That's what I'm talking about."
Brennan handed the paper back to Angela, looking unconvinced, but didn't press the matter any further. "What are you doing here anyway, Booth?"
"A new case, maybe?" Zack sounded hopeful.
Booth leaned against the railing. "No new cases. I'm here to take you out for dinner, Bones."
Four pairs of eyes widened with simultaneous surprise. "... What?" Brennan replied dubiously.
Booth frowned at the collective response from the squints. "Dinner. You know... you, me, food."
Angela grabbed Hodgins by the arm and motioned for Zack to follow her to her office. "I think we may have another private conversation coming on here."
Brennan watched them leave with confusion before turning back to Booth. "Why are you asking me out for dinner?"
"Geez, Bones, we went out for dinner last week too. This isn't any different."
"Except for the fact that you're asking me out for dinner on Valentine's Day."
There was a teasing look in Booth's eyes when he paused to look at her. "But if you don't celebrate Valentine's Day, why should the date bother you at all?"
"It doesn't." She replied firmly. "But some people do attach significance to today's date. I thought, maybe... you might be one of them."
Booth held her questioning gaze for a moment longer before smirking and bounding down the platform. "Go get your coat; I'm driving."
Brennan watched him go, allowing a smile to tug at her lips before grabbing her jacket from her office and heading out to the parking lot.

Date: 2007-02-13 09:03 pm (UTC)I think you had the whole group dynamic right on, I really enjoyed reading this. It was very easy to read, if that makes any sense, like it was playing out before me.. not like I had to drudge through like in some fics where I am fighting the writing just to get to the story.
I've been hearing about those skeletons on the news for a while now and I have to say I probably sounded a lot your Brennan. How convenient of them to come up with this dig just before Valentine's Day. They can't prove they were a couple, or that they were 'lovingly embracing' like the news people have been insinuating. I read one article and it said it was likely the man was being killed and they just threw the woman in as an extra sacrifice because that was common during that time period. How romantic.
Regardless, it was a great concept for a Bones fic, a nice way to tie reality to fantasy, and I liked that you had the characters voicing all the various opinions that may be out there =)

Date: 2007-02-13 09:15 pm (UTC)And I hear ya on the whole skeleton deal. I read things like: "there is little doubt the couple's pose was born of a deep love" and wonder where the heck they is the empirical evidence to back that up. ;P But I think a lot of people want to believe what they're reading, as a means of comfort in this cold cold world, lol!

I loved it, especially that last bit. Too cute. Also, the article was fascinating!
Three thumbs and two toes up!

Date: 2007-02-14 09:17 pm (UTC)Mwahahaha. That's what we say at my house too. Though there is still chocolate -- not the filled kind that comes in twee red boxes, more like a big clunky Galaxy bar. But you know...never turn down chocolate :)
This was a really fun read, many thanks!
